Options for Configuring the Qualtrics LTI

And how it will impact both Canvas and Qualtrics admins.

Deciding how to configure the Qualtrics LTI is an important step for Canvas and Qualtrics admins. As this will have an impact on both admins and what types of surveys are available to users at your institution, please be sure to align on this step before continuing with the setup of the Qualtrics LTI domain configuration or updating your existing configuration.

If you want to use institute and/or department surveys (Enterprise license only):

This ability to have institute and department surveys that can be used by any instructor or admin is useful in certain scenarios. It could be a good option if you have surveys that you want all instructors to be able to add to their course(s), or for you as an admin to add to their course(s) with the Bulk Survey feature, such as for an end-of-course evaluation survey. If you would like to use institute and/or department surveys, then be sure to connect a shared Qualtrics domain, where you will store and collaborate these surveys, to the LTI.

If the Qualtrics admin is not comfortable with the idea that some of their surveys could be added to the LTI by a Canvas admin, and then put into courses by instructors, then we recommend using a separate Qualtrics account to link to the LTI. For example, this could be a Qualtrics account that is shared by all the Qualtrics admins but only has the institute or department surveys in it.

All of the surveys from the linked Qualtrics domain (or surveys that the user who owns the linked Qualtrics API token has access to) could be added to the Qualtrics LTI by the Canvas account’s admin. Once a survey has been added to the LTI, any instructor within that institution (root account) or department (sub-account) could put that survey in their courses, regardless of whether or not they have access to the survey in Qualtrics. If the Qualtrics Admin has access to surveys that they do not want to have the possibility of being added to the LTI for any instructor to use, then their API token should not be used to set up the LTI domain configuration

Along with institutional and department surveys, there is also the option to allow personal surveys. Turning on this setting will allow anyone at your institution (admins and instructors) with a Qualtrics account to add their own surveys to the LTI and attach those surveys to Canvas assignments that they make.

If you want to use personal surveys only:

If you do not want to use institute or department surveys, then be sure not to link a Qualtrics domain to the Canvas root account or any sub-account levels. As long as you turn on the setting to allow “Personal surveys” when connecting a Qualtrics domain, then admins and instructors will be able to add their own personal surveys to the LTI and put those surveys in their Canvas courses. As long as you connect a Qualtrics domain but do not link it to any root or sub-accounts, then there will be no institute or department surveys available for users to put into assignments in their courses.
