Note that in order to configure the Qualtrics LTI for the first time, some settings will need to be enabled on our end at Drieam. If you would like to set up a Qualtrics LTI account for your institution, please reach out to our support team (support@drieam.com). We will walk you through all the steps below. If you have already set up your Qualtrics LTI account and would like to change an aspect of your domain configuration, please see this article for more information.
When first accessing the Qualtrics LTI from the root admin account (Institute Admin), you can follow the steps below to set up your account:
From the main blue “Menu” button in the top right-hand corner, click on “Domain Configuration” (see the image below).
How to Connect your Qualtrics Domain
Once on the domain configuration page, you'll find the option to connect Qualtrics domains and subsequently link these to your Canvas account. You can also use this page to view and edit the Qualtrics domains you added previously. Please see this article for more information on changing your Qualtrics LTI domain configuration.
Different Qualtrics domains can be linked to various Canvas sub-accounts. This might come in handy if your institution has different faculties that want to use department level surveys. However, Qualtrics domains can only be connected at the root account level. Then they can be linked to the root account and any sub-accounts.
You can connect a new Qualtrics domain with the “+ Connect Qualtrics domain” button shown in the image below.
After clicking on “+ Connect Qualtrics domain,” you can begin filling in the domain information.
Start out by filling in the name for your Qualtrics domain that you would like to link to your Canvas account. This name does not have to directly match what it is called in Qualtrics, but should be easily recognizable and understandable to all Canvas admins who would like to link that domain to their account; or instructors who would like to access their personal surveys on that domain For example, if you have multiple faculties with different sub-accounts, be sure to name them clearly so that each Qualtrics domain name matches with the faculty. If you are installing Qualtrics LTI on a root account for the entire institution, then the Qualtrics domain name can be more broad.
You will then be asked to fill in the Qualtrics data center ID. This is necessary to make the connection with Qualtrics. You can find the ID within the URL of your Qualtrics domain. The URL should look something like this: https://yourdatacenterID.qualtrics.com/ Then take the ID from the URL (which should contain both your organization ID and the Qualtrics data center ID) and put it in the data center ID field.
The next step is to fill in your Qualtrics Brand Admin API token. This is information from your Qualtrics Brand Admin and can be found in their Qualtrics account under My Account > Account Settings > User settings > API Section of the page. If there is an existing API token there, then they should use that one. If not, then they may need to generate a new token by clicking on the “Generate Token” button. Note that generating a new token invalidates the old one, and is not recommended if you have other existing integrations with Qualtrics. Copy the token and paste it in the “Brand admin API token” field on the “Add Qualtrics domain” pop-up screen in Qualtrics LTI.
Next, you can choose to enable personal surveys. When the option ‘Enable personal surveys’ is checked, teachers and admins will be able to log in to their Qualtrics account in Canvas and add surveys to their personal surveys page of the Qualtrics LTI. They will then be able to attach these surveys to Canvas assignments that they create.
See the image below for what this “+ Connect Qualtrics domain” pop-up screen looks like.
If you enable personal surveys, it is also required to fill in the OAuth Client ID and Client secret. You can ask your Qualtrics brand admin to create an OAuth token for the Qualtrics LTI. Fill in the OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret from the Qualtrics brand admin. If personal surveys are enabled, you can also enter a contact email address where users can send their questions regarding the Qualtrics LTI. This contact e-mail address will appear when users click “Menu” > “? I need help.”
See the image below for what this extended pop-up screen looks like when the personal surveys checkbox is enabled.
Once you click “Save,” the Qualtrics domain will be added. If you ever need to edit this domain in the future, you can do so by clicking on the pencil icon to the right of the domain.
How to Link to Qualtrics
After connecting one or multiple Qualtrics domains, you can link a Qualtrics account to the Canvas root account or sub-accounts. This is done on the domain configuration page in the “Linked Qualtrics domain” section (see the image below).
You can link to Qualtrics on the root account level and all sub-account levels. This step is only necessary if you would like to use institute or department surveys.
Make sure that you open and fill in the ‘Link to Qualtrics’ screen in the correct Canvas account, depending on your preferences for having Qualtrics connected only to a specific sub-account, or all accounts via the root account. This will ensure that the surveys related to that Qualtrics domain can be used in the courses belonging to that root account or sub-account.
If you link your Qualtrics domain to the Canvas root account, then surveys that are added to that institute’s “Surveys” page in the Qualtrics LTI could be attached to assignments in any course within the institution. On the other hand, Qualtrics domains can also be linked to individual sub-accounts (departments) in Canvas. This would allow Canvas admins to add surveys to the department surveys page of the Qualtrics LTI, and users (instructors and admins) could put those surveys in Canvas assignments within courses in that department.
Once you are located in the correct root account or sub-account in Canvas, you can link to Qualtrics.
First, click “+ Link Qualtrics domain.” Then in the pop-up window select the Qualtrics domain that you want to link to that Canvas account. Next, enter the API token. See the image below for what this should look like.
The Qualtrics admin can find their API token by going to their Qualtrics account, clicking on the profile icon in the top right-hand corner, then clicking on “Account settings.” From there they can navigate to the “User settings” tab to find their Qualtrics API token within the API section. If the Qualtrics Admin ever clicks on “Generate token” in Qualtrics, then it will invalidate the previous token. This would cause the Qualtrics LTI to lose access to all surveys that have already been added.
Note that the surveys that the Qualtrics Admin who supplies their API token has access to can then be added to the LTI and distributed in Canvas course assignments. If you would like to add a Qualtrics survey to the LTI at the institution or department level, it must be created by or collaborated with the Qualtrics account that generated the API token.
Settings & Permissions [Institute Admins Only]
You can edit admin settings and permissions by clicking on the main “Menu” button in the top right-hand corner of the Qualtrics LTI and then by clicking “Settings.”
On the settings page, you'll first see a list of all the optional features under “Admin Settings.” Here you can decide which feature(s) to enable or disable. You can change the settings for these optional features at any time.
Under the Permissions section on the settings page, you can organize the permissions regarding Canvas sub-accounts and sub-account administrators. You can select (or deselect) as many sub-accounts as you wish to give them access to the Qualtrics LTI. Additionally, you can decide which permissions the sub-account administrators in your Canvas environment should have.
Click on the save buttons at the bottom of each section to save your admin settings and permissions after you are done.
