Connect to Qualtrics
If your desired Qualtrics domain is available, you are ready to connect a Qualtrics account from that domain to the Canvas account. You can check all available domains in the 'Set-up' tab.
Please contact your root account administrator if you can't find the desired Qualtrics domain.
Once you are in the set- up you will be able to see the following screen:
You can connect to Qualtrics on root account level and all sub-account levels. Please be mindful that you open and fill in the ‘Connect to Qualtrics’ screen in the right (sub-)account level. This will ensure the surveys related to that Qualtrics domain can be used in the courses belonging to that (sub-)account.
If you are located in the right account in Canvas, you can start connecting to Qualtrics. First, pick your desired Qualtrics domain.
Next, enter the API token. You can find this information under your profile in your Qualtrics account in the tab Qualtrics IDs (3). First we need to switch to Qualtrics. Go to your account on the top right of your Qualtrics screen ans select 'Account Settings'.
From there you will be able to see the 'Qualtrics IDs' field, see bellow:
In the tab 'Canvas data fields' you can view all data fields that are available to use in the surveys you add for your sub-account. If you need a data field that is not listed here, please contact your root account administrator. A full guide on how to use data fields can be found here.
Add surveys to a Canvas sub-account
After connecting to Qualtrics, you are ready to add surveys to your sub-account. First, go to the survey overview by clicking on the 'Return to survey overview' button. Now, click on the 'Add survey' (1) button.
Depending on the set-up of the Qualtrics LTI; you can decide whether to set-up a regular Canvas assignment survey or to create a survey accessible via a QR code for in-class sessions.
You can now select a survey to add to your sub-account.
In the survey overview, you will always find all enabled or disabled surveys. Here you can also check how many assignments the survey is linked to (2), what the status of the survey in Qualtrics is (3), and if the survey is enabled to be used in Canvas (4).
Adding a Qualtrics Survey to a Canvas assignment
You start by creating a new assignment in Canvas. Firstly, select a course to which you would like to add the assignment.
Then go to the Assignments and add a new one.
We recommend giving the assignment a title but not a description to keep the view for students as simple as possible. If you do want to add additional information we recommend adding this as static text to the first block of your Qualtrics survey.
You can set up the first part of the assignment as you would with any other assignment. Next, set the 'Submission type' to External tool (1). You can click on 'Find' (2) to select the Qualtrics LTI.
The following screen will appear. Here you can select the survey you wish to add to the assignment.
After selecting the desired survey, you can edit a few settings as shown below.
Some surveys may contain an embedded data table. The data in the table is send with the survey. Some of these data fields might be pre-filled while others you can set yourself. Click the “Next” button to set-up notifications for the survey. Visit the guide 'Adding Notifications' for more information regarding this feature.
Done with setting up your survey? Click the "Save” button to add the survey to the assignment. You will be automatically redirected to the assignment settings where you can “Save” or “Save & Publish” your assignment.
