What are the different roles and permissions available in Qualtrics LTI?

In Qualtrics LTI there are three basic roles: Instructor, Department Admin, and Institute Admin. The available survey levels are: Your Surveys, Department Surveys, and Institute Surveys.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Instructor

  • Description: Instructors have the lowest level access in Qualtrics LTI. This role is typically given to professors, teachers, or lecturers within an institution.

  • Available Survey Types: Instructors have full access to “Your Surveys” (if this has been enabled and installed by the institute admin). “Your Surveys” are personal surveys for each Qualtrics LTI user. This allows instructors to create their own Qualtrics surveys and add them to their own Canvas courses.

    • The only survey type that instructors can create and edit are their own personal surveys which are stored in “Your Surveys” within the Qualtrics LTI.

    • Instructors will also have access to department surveys (from within their own department) and institute surveys. They will not be able to edit these surveys, but they will be able to view them and add them to their courses. They will only be able to see the department and institute survey results if they also have access to that survey in Qualtrics.

  • Qualtrics LTI Access: Instructors can access the Qualtrics LTI from their “Account” tab in Canvas Global Navigation, and then click on Qualtrics LTI (note: the name that appears in the sidebar depends on what your institute admin called the Qualtrics LTI during the installation, so it may be called “Qualtrics” or another similar name). See the image below for the banner that reads “Your Surveys” – this shows that you are accessing your personal Qualtrics surveys within the Qualtrics LTI.

  • More Information: For more information on getting started as an instructor, please see the help article folder called “How to Use Qualtrics LTI as an Instructor.”

Department Admin

  • Description: Department admins are the second level role in Qualtrics LTI. They have access to everything within one department.

  • Available Survey Types: Department admins have full access to both “Department Surveys” and “Your Surveys.” Department surveys can be shared and used in any course within the department.

    • Department admins can create and edit “Department Surveys” and their own personal surveys in “Your Surveys.”

    • Note that Department admins will also have access to institute surveys. They will not be able to edit institute surveys, but they will be able to view them and add them to their courses.

  • Qualtrics LTI Access: Department admins can access the Qualtrics LTI from their “Admin” tab in Canvas Global Navigation. See the image below for the banner that reads “Department Surveys” – this shows that you are accessing your department Qualtrics surveys.

  • More Information: For more information on getting started as a department admin, please see the help article folder called “How to use Qualtrics LTI as an Admin.”

Institute Admin

  • Description: An institute admin is the highest level role in Qualtrics LTI. They have access to the root account where Qualtrics LTI is installed, and are sometimes referred to as “Root Account Admins.”

  • Available Survey Types: Institute admins have full access to all Qualtrics LTI survey types. Institute Surveys, which are surveys that are available to use throughout the institution, can only be created and edited by root account admins. This is a great option for institute admins who want to use the bulk survey feature of Qualtrics LTI, which allows you to distribute the same survey in many courses at once.

  • Qualtrics LTI Access: Institute admins can access the Qualtrics LTI institute surveys from the “Admin” tab in Canvas Global Navigation. See the image below for the banner that reads “Institute Surveys” – this shows that you are accessing Institution wide Qualtrics surveys.

  • More Information: For more information on getting started as an admin, please see the help article folder called “How to use Qualtrics LTI as an Admin.”
