Portflow sends notifications to a user when:

These notifications appear in Portfolio and are forwarded to the Canvas Inbox. By default, Canvas Notifications are set to immediately send an email to the user when an Inbox message is posted. This can be changed in  Account > Notifications. In "conversations", and "conversation notifications" you can set whether or not these messages are immediately forwarded to your e-mail. This can also be done periodically.

Note: Changing these setting will affects the notifications of regular Canvas Inbox messages
