Introduction
In order to start distributing surveys through Qualtrics LTI, you must first add the survey to one of the Levels within the app (Institute level, Department level, or Personal Surveys). Afterwards, you must create Configurations for that survey.
These Survey Configurations live within the context of that survey on that level and grant you fine control over which embedded data fields, Canvas submission settings, and more are associated with the Canvas assignments you distribute the surveys into.
✏️ Note: These Survey Configurations are equivalent to the "Surveys" in the old version of the UI. In the newest version of the UI, we separated the concept of a "Survey" and the "Configurations" and split the UI up.Each Configuration is comprised of a Survey Mode and a Distribution Method. One determines how the survey will be treated by Qualtrics LTI and the other determines how you will be distributing it.
✏️ Note: The Survey Mode and Distribution Method were previously merged into one term: the "survey type". In the newest version of the UI, we separated the concept out to both make it clearer and also to allow certain survey types to be distributed through bulk.Survey Modes
The following Survey Modes will determine how Qualtrics LTI handles the survey.
Standard
This is the default behaviour of Qualtrics LTI: When a student opens the associated Canvas assignment, the survey will simply open. Embedded data field values will be present in the survey and its response as normal.
After completing the survey, the student will be shown the usual 'End of survey' page and a Canvas submission will be made (if enabled).
In-class (QR code)
This Survey Mode allows you to distribute a survey in a classroom, similarly to Qualtrics' own QR code distribution method.
When an instructor opens the associated Canvas assignment, Qualtrics LTI will show a QR code — this can, for instance, be shared on a projector in a classroom or lecture hall. When a student scans the QR code, they are taken to the survey and the embedded data field values are forwarded through.
QR codes create anonymous submissions, meaning that students are not logged into Canvas when they respond. Therefore, embedded data fields relating to student data are unavailable.
After completing the survey, the student will be shown the usual 'End of survey' page and a Canvas submission will be made (if enabled).
Distribution Methods
The distribution method that you choose determines how you wish your Configuration to be distributed. This allows you to set up different configurations for distributions that you intend to distribute manually vs. in bulk.
Manual
This Distribution Method allows you to distribute the associated configuration manually in Canvas' New assignment view.
After creating the Configuration, simply navigate to Canvas course → Assignments → New assignment → Submission type → External tool → Qualtrics LTI. From there, you can select the Configuration that you made.
Bulk
This Distribution Method allows you to distribute the associated configuration to many courses at once, even creating multiple assignments if you wish. This is powered by our Bulk Wizard.
After creating the Configuration, simply navigate to Qualtrics LTI -> Bulk distributions and create your bulk distribution there.
