Use case

In order to be able to offer accredited studies, you may want to specify the number of credits assigned to each program element, and set a total number of credits needed to complete the program. Additionally, you may want to track the progress of participants by looking at the awarded credits on their personal program.

Credits vs program credits

Eduframe has two different 'credit systems'. The following table highlights the differences:

Interchangeable studyload points. Usually 'Credits' or 'ECTS'.

Enabling program credits

Program credits are disabled by default. If you want to use program credits, you can activate the functionality in 'Settings' -> 'Credits' -> 'Program credits'. Over here you can configure a name to use for program credits. This name will show in all other locations in the application.

Configuring program credits for a course

When the program credits functionality is enabled, an admin can configure program credits on the course template. The amount of program credits configured here will be the amount of program credits shown and awarded in the programs this course is part of.

A big difference between the 'course credits' functionality and 'program credits' functionality is the fact that program credits are strictly aligned. Different participants of different programs will always get the same amount of program credits when doing the same course (template). When changing the program credits on a course template, the change will even change already awarded credits

Info: credits are specified with a precision of one decimal, and the number of credits for a single element cannot exceed 100.

Enabling program credits for a program

When the program credits functionality is enabled an admin can enable to program credits for specific program templates. By default, program credits are disabled for the program templates. To enable the program credits functionality for a program, an admin can turn on the “Uses program credits” switch when creating or updating a program template. This enables the program credits functionality for all program editions belonging to this template.

Configuring program credits on the program edition

When the program credits functionality is enabled both in settings and on the program template, the program edition will show credits. For course elements the elements will show the amount of program credits configured on the course. For all other elements that are not courses and not blocks the amount of credits can be configured on the program edition element. This concerns the following elements:

When clicking the three dots at the end of the row for one of these elements, and clicking the ‘Edit credits’ button, a drawer will open in which the number of credits can be specified. When saved, this number is shown in the ‘Credits’ column in the table.

Above the table, the total number of credits needed to complete the program is shown. This number is calculated by summing up the credits of all elements in the table, including credits assigned to elective elements.

Credits on the personal program

When a program enrollment is created, all edition elements except the elective element are added to the corresponding personal program. These elements are displayed in the personal program table. This also shows the configured number of credits for these elements coming from the edition.

Additionally, for elements that are marked as elective, credits will be shown and can be awarded. Courses will show the configured amount of program credits coming from the course template. For all other elements (thesis, evaluation) the amount of credits can be configured on the element itself. This is done the same way as for the elements on the program edition. Credits awarded for elective elements count towards the required number of credits from electives, which is specified by the edition.

Awarding credits

Credits on the personal program are awarded automatically, when the corresponding element is passed. It is not possible to award partial credits: the participant is awarded either the full amount of credits, or none. For each element of the personal program - if credits are configured - you can see both the credits awarded and the credits assigned in the table.

Above the personal program table you can see a progress bar, which represent the credits-wise progress of the participant. The bar shows the total number of credits that have been awarded to the participant, out of the total number of credits assigned to the personal program. Optionally an information message is shown that shows the amount of elective credits that still need to be planned.

In the enrollments table for the program edition, a column is now present that shows an overview of the credits-wise progress of the participant. This column shows how many credits have been awarded. Additionally, above the table, the number of total required credits for this program edition is shown. Optionally an information icon is shown in case the personal program still needs planning of additional elective credits.

Note: the credits functionality provides information only. It does not automate or restrict program completion
